Scoring & Performance Standards

Each dancer is evaluated in ten categories, each worth 10 points, for a total possible score of 100. Judges assess specific elements within every category to ensure fair and accurate scoring. Categories include: technical skill, choreography, performance quality, musicality, strength, flexibility, stage presence, artistry, execution, costuming, and overall impact.

Scores reflect a dancer’s elite-level proficiency, with winners chosen for their ability to captivate and impress.

  1. Technical Skill

    • Difficulty – Performing complex and demanding advanced-level technique with ease and confidence.

    • Turns – Precision and control in all types of turns, maintaining balance and placement.

    • Leaps – Impressive height, dynamic extension, and smooth landings.

    • Extensions – Full, clean lines emphasizing flexibility and control.

    • Acrobatics – Aerials and tumbling integrated seamlessly; should enhance the performance, not replace it.

    • Accuracy – Precise execution with attention to alignment, placement, and detail.

  2. Choreography

    • Creativity – Original and engaging movement and patterns.

    • Musical Interpretation – Choreography reflects rhythm, dynamics, and accents.

    • Difficulty – Complex sequences, seamless transitions, advanced techniques, and aerial elements.

    • Space & Structure – Effective use of the stage with well-structured sequences that maintain audience interest.

  3. Performance Quality

    • Emotional Connection – Authentic expression that resonates with the audience.

    • Expressiveness – Facial expressions and body language enhance storytelling.

    • Energy – Consistent enthusiasm, commitment, and vitality throughout the performance.

  4. Musicality

    • Timing – Staying on beat and in sync with the music.

    • Rhythmic Perception – Sensitivity to accents, pauses, and syncopations.

    • Dynamic Interpretation – Reflecting musical highs and lows through movement intensity and quality.

  5. Strength & Flexibility

    • Conditioning & Stamina – Strength, fitness, and endurance for advanced techniques and sustained performances.

    • Flexibility – Full-body range of motion for jumps, extensions, and fluid movement.

    • Graceful Strength – Muscular power displayed with elegance.

  6. Stage Presence

    • Confidence – Engaging and commanding from entrance to exit.

    • Charisma – Natural magnetism that holds audience attention.

    • Engagement – Interaction with the audience through eye contact and expression.

  7. Artistry

    • Interpretation – Personal depth and originality brought to choreography.

    • Originality – Unique, imaginative approach that sets the performance apart.

    • Emotion & Passion – Genuine emotion and intensity conveyed through movement.

  8. Execution

    • Clean Movement – Sharp, precise lines and clear intent.

    • Control & Stability – Balance and posture during complex sequences.

    • Fluidity & Transitions – Smooth, seamless movement flow.

    • Footwork – Accurate, detailed placement and articulation.

    • Posture – Proper alignment and polished presentation throughout.

  9. Costuming (see costume guidelines)

    • Appropriateness – Suits the style and follows contest rules.

    • Enhancement – Adds to the choreography and visual effect.

    • Fit – Secure, comfortable, and professional.

    • Visual Appeal – Polished without being distracting.

Costume Guidelines

Costumes play a key role in professionalism, stage presentation, and overall impact. Please follow these standards to ensure your performance looks polished and reflects the prestige of Advanced Dance Contest:

  1. Fit & Durability

    • Must fit securely (not too loose or tight) and cover all sensitive areas.

    • Use secure closures, reinforced seams, and high-quality dance fabrics.

    • Rehearse in costume to prevent malfunctions during performance.

  2. Color & Design

    • Costumes should be stage-friendly: vibrant and expressive designs are encouraged, but avoid patterns or colors that are visually overwhelming or distracting from the performance.

    • Should complement the choreography and enhance the dancer’s lines.

    • Must flatter the dancer’s shape and boost confidence on stage.

  3. Accessories & Embellishments

    • All decorations (sequins, rhinestones, appliqués) must be securely attached.

    • Avoid shedding glitter or fragile details.

    • Test accessories during rehearsals to ensure they remain in place.

  4. Hair & Makeup

    • Hair should be neat, secure, and complement the overall costume and choreography.

    • Makeup should enhance features and expression for stage visibility, supporting the character or style of the dance.

    • Aim for a polished and professional presentation that strengthens the performance.
